Healthy Holiday Eating: How to Enjoy Festive Meals Without Overindulging

Everybody knows that December, specifically  in Nigeria, is always about enjoyment. You get to relax, see family, go for concerts/events and most importantly, enjoy delicious meals. From jollof rice and chicken to pounded yam and egusi to pepper soup and eko and then small chops, there’s something about December meals and they are always a banger

However, while it’s tempting to eat every meal, overindulging can lead to unwanted weight gain, sluggishness, and potential health issues. Some Nigerian dishes are high in calories, fats and sugar which could cause your body to store excess fat, spike blood sugar levels and even overwhelm your digestive system. The good thing though, is that it’s still possible for you to enjoy your meals this holiday without overdoing it. Here’s how:

1. Portion Control

Instead of going for large servings of dishes served during the festive season, take smaller portions of each item. This way, you can enjoy the diversity of flavors without overloading your plate. A small scoop of jollof rice, a few pieces of fried plantains, and a moderate serving of goat meat or chicken will allow you to indulge while keeping your calorie intake in check.

You could also consider using a smaller plate for your meals. This way, you’re more mindful with your eating.

 2. Choose Healthier Cooking options

Anywhere you see deep-fried meats, avoid it and opt for roasted or grilled instead. Deep fried meats often contain unhealthy fats and calories whereas roasting/grilling are a much healthier option.

 3. Increase Your Vegetable Intake

Vegetables are underrated. Not only are they nutritious, but they also help fill you up without piling on the calories. If your aim is to enjoy yourself but in a healthy way, include a variety of vegetable-based sides like ugu (pumpkin leaves), efo riro (spinach stew), and ata din din (tomato-based stew with pepper and onions) in your meals.

4. Avoid Over Consuming Sugary Foods

From fruit juices and sodas to pastries like small chops, the holiday season is always packed with sugary treats. These foods, though tasty, can quickly increase your calorie intake, lead to blood sugar spikes, and leave you feeling sluggish. While it’s okay to enjoy a quick quick snack every now and then, try to limit your intake.

You can opt for homemade fruit juices or smoothies with little or no added sugar. If you’re craving something sweet, try lighter options like fruit salads, parfait or snacks with less sugar.

 5. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential to maintaining your energy levels and promoting digestion. Water helps with controlling appetite, reducing cravings, and preventing overeating.

Keep a bottle of water close, and try to drink plenty throughout the day, especially before and after meals.

6. Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption

The holiday season often involves celebrations with alcohol, whether it’s Azul, beer, or Hennessy VSOP. Alcoholic beverages can be high in empty calories, which don’t provide your body with nutrients and can contribute to weight gain. Also, alcohol has been said to be bad for the liver. Drink in moderation or totally avoid if you can.

In conclusion
You don’t have to deprive yourself of your favourite dishes this festive season because you want to stay healthy, you only need to be mindful. By practicing portion control and choosing healthier options, you can maintain a healthy balance and truly enjoy the season without compromising your well-being and if you need advice from a professional on food and health, a doctor on Heala is a few taps away.
